1314707 Mixing apparatus E GABBRIELLI 23 June 1970 [25 June 1969] 30537/70 Heading B1C [Also in Division B5] An extruder for rubber and plastics materials comprises a cylindrical impeller 2, Fig. 1, rotating within a cylindrical chamber 5 defined by a casing 1 and end partitions 6, 7 the latter 7 whereof is provided with an opening 16 through which material is delivered to a die outlet 12 via a conical space 11 defined with a tapered extension of the impeller 2, and the former 6 whereof is provided with an opening 15 through which material is delivered to the chamber 5 from a plasticising chamber 13 supplied with the material in powder or particulate form at the port 113 of a hopper 14. Material passing axially through the opening 15 is entrained within chamber 5 by the impeller 2 forced past an axially directed baffle 9 which extends from the casing 1 for the length of the chamber 5, and is then prevented from further rotation with the impeller 2 and diverted through the opening 16 by an axially directed doctor blade 8 extending also from the casing 1 for the length of the chamber 5. The plasticising chamber 13 is cylindrical and includes a helical thread 17, formed in a rearward extension 103 of the impeller 2 and which extends circumferentially for less than 360‹, the maximum axial width thereof cyclically interrupting the supply of material through the hopper port 113. The chambers 13 and 5 are heated by fluid in cavities 18, 19. In the Fig. 4 embodiment, the impeller 2 is supplied with material via openings 15 located at each end of the chamber 5 and through which the material is supplied by plasticising chambers 13 each including a thread of opposite hand; the material being extruded tangentially from the chamber 5 as a film.
