In a radioactive time standard, the radioactive mass 14 is mounted on the face of the solid state detector 15, the output of which is applied through the amplifier and sealer, 11 and 12, to the register 13. Plutonium 242, uranium 233, peptonium 237 or protactinium 231 may be used for 14 and the detector may be of the diffused junction or transistor counter type. To compensate for the continuous nature of the beta particle spectrum, the sealer operates only at energies above a predetermined level. In a modification, a scintillator is interposed between the radioactive material and the detector. The radioactive source may be dissolved in a liquid scintillator or dispersed in plastic or a crystal scintillator.
