Novel L or DL-2-gnanidino- 1 ,3-thiazolinecarboxylic acids or derivatives thereof of the Formula (I) wherein X is a monovalent anion or a half equivalent of a divalent anion, are obtained by reacting cysteine or its hydrochloride with dicyanamide and, if desired, converting the free acid so produced to copper-containing compounds by reaction with appropriate copper compounds and, if desired, converting these compounds into other compounds of the above formula, e.g. (I) reacting the basic copper salts (X representing -CuOH) with organic or inorganic acids, such as acetic, benzoic 5-nitroorotic and aspartic acids, to give double salts or with alkalis, ammonia or organic bases to give anhydrides (X representing Cu linked to a second guanidino-thiazoline moiety). The basic copper salts may be used to effect resolution of D,L aspartic acid into its optical isomers.
