A steam heated drier roller comprises an outer shell 13 bolted to end heads 14 and provided with grooves 48 of uniform depth over a central portion and grooves 48a-48e of decreasing depth at each end. The ribs 47 may be circular or helical. The bottoms of grooves 48a-48e and 48 lie on a circular arc 54 and a straight line 49, respectively cross-section. The end heads are braced by stays (19), Fig. 1 (not shown), which carry headers from which ejector pipes extend into the grooves, these pipes may be in every groove or in a predetermined pattern and may be set at different heights to provide the desired insulating action of the condensate. A hollow central shaft is formed of two halves bolted together at the centre with a central diaphragm to provide for the introduction of steam and withdrawal of condensate. The shaft ends form supporting journals and an extension at one end is for mounting driving means. In a prior art disclosure, Fig. 4 (not shown); the grooves 48a-48e are replaced by a frustoconical plain section.
