Hot gases produced by cracking hydrocarbons are fed from a cracking-zone 5 to a venturi-scrubber where they are quenched by jets of liquid from orifices 8, needle-like members 12 being arranged periodically to clean the orifices by a reciprocating movement. Gases and liquid are separated in a chamber 10, the gases leaving at 11. In modifications the convergent and the convergent and throat portions of the venturi-tube may be omitted, in the latter case the orifices for introducing liquid are arranged around the inlet end of the divergent portion of the scrubber.
