Amber type perfumes - synthesis from myrcene and itaconic acid anhydride

Diene adduct obtd. from myrcene and itaconic acid anhydride is converted to a cyclised adduct (e.g. with BF3-etherate), which is reduced to a diol (e.g. with LiAlH4) and converted to a cyclised ether, the amber odour of which can be modified by hydrogenation to satd. ether of formula:-
