A 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophane (I) producing micro-organism is fermented in an aq. nutrient medium contg. 5-hydroxyindole (II) and (I) is isolated from the culture broth. Pref. micro-organisms used are strains of Bacillus, Corynebacterium, Arthrobacter, Micrococcus, Brevibacterium, Hansenula or Candida. Nutrient media may be synthetic or complex containing N- and C-sources as well as inorganic salts, vitamins, trace materials. (II) is pref. added after 24 hours fermentation of the culture, and pref. in portions or continually over a certain period, so that the concentration does not inhibit bacterial growth.
