Refractory material for steel refining furnaces, ladles etc., which is more resistant to high temp. attack by the carbon in the melt comprises a mixture of magnesium aluminats spinel with a binder, the mixture being shaped, then first at a temp. high enough to melt or partially melt the binder allowing it to flow and produce a dense, compact body. The binder is made by melting eutectic MgO/MgO Al2O3 cooling, finely grinding, melting eutectic Al2O3/MgAl2O3, cooling, finely grinding and mixing the two components in controlled proportions.
