Electrode for rechargeable cells comprises an active material (pref. Zn) in the form of a grid or gauze, sandwiched between two plastic layers at least one of which is an ionic conductor e.g. PVA. The other layer may also be PVA or may be a material permeable to gas esp. H2, e.g. PTFE. The electrode is made by pressing the Zn between the two plastic films in a mould with flexible faces, at 210 degrees C and 10 kg/cm2 if both films are PVA, or at 240 degrees C, 10 kg/cm2 for one PVA, one PTFE.
