Selvedge units - using hollow needles to carry selvedge weft yarns giving timed insertion and rapid needle withdrawal

The selvedges on a conventional or shuttleless loom are created by side-mounted hollow needles carrying the selvedge weft yarns. Their action is co-ordinated by the action of the loom to insert a selvedge weft timed with the main weft insertion, with a ratchet and spring rapid return action to allow the closing warps to grip the selvedge yarn progressively and lock them in position to build up the selvedge at one or both sides.
