1379570 Trailers; road vehicle couplings MARTIN FIALA KG 31 Dec 1971 [13 March 1971] 61037/71 Headings B7B and B7T A trailer 5 has a socket 6 into which a coupling tongue 9 of a tractor 1 can be inserted to provide a traction coupling between tractor and trailer on raising the tongue after its insertion into the socket, the socket 6 increasing in width from a position 21 inset from its mouth to its rear and being provided with means, e.g. 23, for centering the tongue 9 in the socket when the tongue is raised. The centering means may, as shown in Fig. 6, comprise projections 23 from the base of the socket or alternatively, Fig. 7, inclined parts 20 of the socket side walls which may join with horizontal parts of the socket walls as shown in full lines or with vertical parts of the socket walls as shown in dotted lines. The base of the socket 6 may slope downwardly towards the socket mouth as shown in Fig. 1 and the socket may increase in width from the position 21 to its mouth as shown in Fig. 6. The socket width at the position 21 may correspond to the width of the part of the tongue 9 which is located there when the tractor and trailer are coupled. The trailer may have a socket 6 at each end (Fig. 4, not shown). The tongue 9 may form part of a goose-neck 4 supported on a saddle plate 3 of the tractor 1, the plate 3 being carried on an arm 2 which can be pivoted to raise the tongue 9 and the goose-neck 4 being provided with a counter-balancing weight 11 serving to hold the tongue 9 horizontal when the tractor and trailer are not coupled. To prevent disengagement of the tongue 9 from the socket 6 the tongue may have a lug (24) on its upper surface engageable with a recess in the socket roof (Fig. 5, not shown) or a part-spherical projection (27) at its free end which engages a recess in the base of the socket (Fig. 8, not shown).
