1,255,651. Cigarette making. HAUNI-WERKE KORBER & CO. K.G. 9 Dec., 1968 [2 Jan., 1968; 16 May, 1968], Nos. 307/68 and 23250/68. Heading A2C. A method for ejecting faulty cigarettes flowing in a feed path from a machine producing them in which means responsive to operating conditions of the machine in which such faulty cigarettes are or are likely to be produced, are adapted to control the operation of ejector means which means are caused to eject such faulty cigarettes in step with the passage of successive cigarettes past the ejector means. A suitable apparatus for carrying out the above process, is illustrated in Figs. 1a and 1b. In this apparatus cut tobacco from a distributor I is transferred to forming wheel 6 and formed into a rod 9 by trimming device 8. This rod and cigarette paper strip 13 are introduced into a forming member 10 and the paper envelopes the tobacco and is gummed by the gumming wheel 20 to form a cigarette rod 14. This rod is severed by cutting device 17 and transferred to a delivery drum 21. The machine is driven by motor 23 which is connected to supply terminals 29. Switches 24, 26 are provided on a control box 31 for slow starting or normal operative speeds. Shaft 34 carries a disc 41 on which are mounted evenly distributed magnets 42. On rotation of this disc, an electrical pulse is induced in detector head 43 by magnets 42. A pneumatic ejector device is positioned adjacent to groove 22, this device being operable by valve 47 which is controlled by electro-magnet 48. A sensing, preferably photoelectric, device 51 is positioned by the path of the paper strip 13 for sensing adhesive joins in the strip. Faults in the adhesive seam of the cigarette rod 14 is detected by the detector 57. A device 63, to sense the quantity of tobacco per unit of monitored cigarette rod comprises a #-radiation source and detector. This is connected both to control box 31 and to adjusting motor 68 of rod trimming means 8. In Fig. 2 (not shown), there is illustrated the electrical cyclically controlled devices for controlling the pneumatic ejector device. Faults detected in sensing means 51, 57 and 63, are registered in shift registers 76, 77 and 78. The fault signals travel through the registers in synchronism with a fault and this electrically operates the ejector device 45. When the machine is operating below normal conditions, for instance when the machine is started or is thus running at below the normal operative speed, the control circuit in Fig. 2 is such that electrically induced pulses from detector head 43 operates the electromagnet 48 so that a jet of air is emitted from nozzle 45 to remove cigarettes from groove 22. When the machine is operating at normal speeds, the pulses from detector head 43 no longer initiate the electromagnet 48. Alternatively the ejector device may be controlled pneumatically as illustrated in Fig. 3 (not shown). Adjacent the ejector may be positioned a feeler arm, which arm will sense cigarettes that have not been ejected and are thus fault-free. This sensing activates further machine action, for instance the delivery of a supply of filter plugs.
