An auxiliary type member for single element typewriters comprises a character-bearing member 44 having a handle 48, Fig. 4, and a type member 52, and a support member 42 which includes adjustment means 78 to register a type member 52 with a line of type. The support member 42 is fixed to a conventional pivotal platform 6 carrying the print element 4, a bore 30 conventionally provided in the platform receiving a lower end portion of the support member 42 either by screw threads as shown or by an expanding collar (Figs. 7-10, not shown). The adjustment means 78 comprises a collar adjustable by means of a screw thread 70, the character-bearing member 44 resting on the collar. The type member 52 may have a curved surface 55, Fig. 4, for engagement by a type character on the print element 4, or may be formed with ribs or walls (130, 132), Figs. 11- 13, not shown, for engagement with the portion of the print element surrounding a type character.
