Apparatus for flaw detection in which a pulsed ultrasonic beam scans as in Fig. 2 and echoes from boundaries transverse to the beam are blanked out, utilizes an electron recording beam in a storage oscilloscope the electron beam moving along one dimension, being deflected at right angles to that dimension as a function of the amplitude of unblanked echoes and moving continuously along that dimension without reversing during a plurality of back and forth scans of the ultrasonic beam.
