1284252 Complex-forming polymers RHONEPOULENC SA 27 July 1970 [28 July 1969 26 Aug 1969] 36337/70 Headings C3P and C3R Complex-forming polymers contain repeating units of formula where L is a valency bond or -O-, -S-, -CO-, -CHRSP1/SP- or -NRSP1/SP- (RSP1/SP being hydrogen or alkyl), a, aSP1/SP and aSP2/SP are hydrogen, alkyl groups or valency bonds, one or two of these symbols being valency bonds, or aSP1/SP and aSP2/SP together are -CRSP1/SP=CRSP1/SP-, the units being linked together by polyvalent radicals. The polymers are obtained from monomers of the formula above but where a, aSP1/SP and aSP2/SP are not valency bonds, by polymerization through olefinically unsaturated substituents in the monomer, by polycondensation through reactive substituents in the monomer with other reactive compounds, or by attaching the monomer to previously produced polymers, e.g. by condensation reactions. The polymers form complexes when they or their acid addition salts are reacted with compounds containing non-alkaline metal atoms, co-ordination bonds joining the nitrogen atoms in the polymers to the metal atoms. In examples, polymers are obtained by condensing 4,4SP1 /SP- bis - (p - formylstyryl)- 2,2SP1/SP-dipyridyl with cyclohexanone and acetone, by condensing 4,4SP1/SP-diamino-2,2SP1/SP-dipyridyl with 4,4SP1/SP-diisocyanato-diphenylmethane and with pyromellitic anhydride, by reacting 4,4SP1/SP-dimethyl-2,2SP1/SP-dipyridyl with sodamide and then with 1,5-dibromopentane, by reacting 4,4SP1/SP-bis- (p-formylstyryl)-2,21-dipyridyl with polyvinyl alcohol and trioxymethylene, and by reacting 4,4SP1/SP-dimethyl-2,2SP1/SP-dipyridyl, with p-divinylbenzene; some of the polymers are used to form complexes with various metal compounds. Uses.-In the extraction and recovery of metals.
