When relative movement between cable 12 and the signalling devices occurs in direction A the cable is deflected from its zero position with respect to device 7, switch 62 is closed and winch 5 is operated to haul in its hawser attached to point I to tend to produce restoring movement in direction B. The operation of the winch by the sensing means is independent of the tension in the hawser. In the embodiment shown, winches 4 and 5 operate together to produce restoring movement in one direction and winches 2 and 3 to restore movement in the opposite direction.
