The vertical shaft electric motor drive disclosed drives a bobbin 14 on which filamentary material is wound or twisted. The motor stator includes a laminated core 6 and ring winding 7 embedded in sealing compound 8 secured to a housing 5 which in turn is secured to the flange 3. The rotor has an upper short circuiting ring 12 secured to flange 10 by screws 13. The air gap between the rotor and stator increases in length from the middle of the gap towards both axial ends of the gap to allow for lateral movement of shaft 2.
