Chlorine or bromine is added in at least the stoichiometric amt. to a mixt. of a 2,3-ethylenically unsatd. alcohol and a solvent inert to the halogen, contg. 5-40% of the unsatd. alcohol based on the total wt. of solvent and alcohol; maintaining the mixt. at a reaction temp. of -10 degrees C to +30 degrees C and stirring so as to produce high turbulence during the halogenation. The prod. obtd. may be used, without purificn. by distn, to obtain a good quality tris-(2,3-dibromoalkyl)phosphate (by reaction with POCl3) useful as flameproofing agents.
