1282507 Removing Fe from titaniferous material BRITISH TITAN Ltd 22 July 1970 [31 July 1969] 38479/69 Headings C1A and C1N An iron containing titaniferous material is leached with an aqueous inorganic acid and then calcined at 800-1000‹ C. The material may be ilmenite of particle size 50-300 Á in which the iron has been oxidized at 800-900‹ C. to FeSP3+/SP and then reduced at 600-1100‹ C. to FeSP2+/SP with H 2 Œsteam, or a gaseous hydrocarbon containing 1-4 carbon atoms, in a fluidized bed. The acid is preferably 18-22% HCl and is used at 80‹ C. to the b.pt. A 2-stage leaching process may be used, as described in Specification 1,282,506. The calcination may be effected in a fluidized bed or rotary kiln. The product may be mixed with coke and reacted with Cl 2 in fluidized bed to give TiCl 4 .
