A steam-heated drying drum has condensate removal nozzles 39-54 uniformly distributed over the inner surface of the drum and connected to conduits 59-65 which remove water from the drum through a bore 36 in a trunnion 35. The nozzles rotate with the drum and serve to maintain a substantially uniform layer of condensate of minimum thickness at high drum speeds when the condensate rims the interior surface of the drum. Steam is admitted through a bore 37 in a trunnion 34 and thence through holes 38 to the interior of the drum. Each nozzle is relatively long and narrow and has a single long narrow opening or three such openings extending in a radial plane of the drum. In a modification each nozzle has three circular openings disposed in a radial plane. A scoop may be provided to remove condensate collecting in the lower part of the drum when it is driven at slow speed.
