A flexible optical light guide for lasers is produced by softening a homogeneous quartz rod of in an anhydrous ionised atmos and drawing it out to a dia. to ensure flexibility. When still hot, it is transferred to a water-contg. atmos. for cooling where the water produces a pref. 0.2-0.5 mu thick layer of lower refractive index. The tapered ends are the light input and output points.
