The organically-bound carbon, inorganically-bound carbon and consumption of oxidising agent for water samples, esp. sources, sewage and effluents are determined in a continuous process. The water is mixed with strong acid, the CO2 evolved is removed and the inorganic-C determined. The remaining fluid is brought to constant temp., oxidised with K2Cr2O7, Ag2SO4 and conc. H2SO4, the resulting gas collected and the organic-C content determined. The oxidising agent consumed is calculated after analysis of the fluid remaining. The process can be automated using a multichannel peristaltic pump, two gas-fluid separating chambers and a constant temp.
