1334624 Continuous trans-esterification of dialkyl esters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids with diols FASERWERKE HULS GmbH 19 April 1971 [18 March 1970] 24287/71 Heading C2C The invention comprises using a series of successively arranged reaction zones in a continuous trans-esterification of dialkyl esters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids with diols, which zones are operated at the same or different pressures and temperatures and in which the pressure and temperature conditions can be graded so as to achieve a predetermined conversion and wherein the transesterification is effected in a system consisting of one or more stirred zones and one or more tubular zones arranged in alternating succession. A suitable apparatus is shown in Fig. 1 where the reactors are arranged in the form of a cascade for the successive passage therethrough of reaction mixture and each reactor is provided with a heating means; the apparatus is also supplied with pressure control valves in the vapour outlets from the stirred vessels by means of which the pressure in each reactor can be adjusted via pipe-line valves in the liquid reaction mixture outlets from the stirred vessels. In particular, dimethyl terephthalate is trans-esterified with ethylene glycol.
