ANTIFUNGAL ANTIBIOTIC OBTAINED FROM BASIDIOMYCETE OUDEMANSIELLA MUCIDA AND PROCESS OF MAKING THE SAME

A fermentation broth containing a new antifungal antibiotic mucidin is obtained by growing the basidiomycete Ondemannsiella mucida under aerobic conditions in a liquid growth medium containing a source of assimilable carbon and nitrogen and a mineral nutrient salt and preferably by submerged cultivation. The pH is 3 to 7 and preferably 5.5 to 6.0, the temperature is 18‹ to 25‹ C. and the duration is 6 to 8 days. The clarified broth or separated mycelium may be extracted with a solvent such as ethyl ether, ethanol, ethyl acetate or chloroform. The solvent is removed and the extract dissolved in a pharmaceutical solvent to produce a pharmaceutical composition for topical use. Mucidin is active against fungi but not bacteria; it shows absorption peaks in the U.V. region at 205, 211, 223, 229, 237, 284, 292, 299 and 312 mÁ.
