1433359 Substituted alkylphenols and their use for the control of microorganisms and the preservation of materials CIBA-GEIGY AG 16 Aug 1973 [28 Aug 1972] 38829/73 Heading C2C The invention comprises an alkylphenol of formula wherein X 1 and X 2 represent halogen, and m is an integer from 1 to 11. This compound may be obtained by reducing a ketone of formula wherein X 1 , X 2 and m are as defined in claim 1, alternatively, by halogenating a compound of formula wherein X 1 and m are as defined above. In Example I, the following intermediates are prepared:-(A) caproic acid-3,5-dichlorophenyl ester by the reaction of 3,5-dichlorophenol with caproic acid chloride, (B) 2- hydrory-4,6-dichlorocaprophenone by the rearrangement of compound (A) in the presence of AlCl 3 (anhyd.). The invention also relates to a solid or liquid composition useful for the control of microorganisms comprising an alkylphenol of Formula I and one or more of the following: a solid inert carrier, a surface-active agent, an agent for protection against light, an optical brightener, a fungicide, a bactericide or an animal foodstuff.
