1,241,972. Storage battery. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 16 Dec., 1968 [1 Jan., 1968], No. 15/68. Heading H1B. A battery includes a casing 11 which is divided into compartments 12 by partition walls 13 each of which houses a battery plate pack 14 and the casing and compartments are closed by lid 15. A perforated baffle plate 16 lies on top of each pack 14 which inhibits splashing of electrolyte. Lid 15 has a channel 17 which communicates with compartment 12 via stepped bore 18. Each bore has extensions 21 formed with slots 22. A sleeve 23 is mounted within the wider part of each bore and has a valve portion 23a and an axially resilient portion 23b, the free end of which engages baffle 16, and urges its respective valve portion 23a upwardly in sealing engagement with shoulder 19 of bore 18, thus closing compartment 12 to the atmosphere. When a cover 24, which is formed with resilient fingers 25, engages channel 17 the fingers 25 enter bore 18 in the lid and engage flanges 23c of sleeves 23 thus moving valve portion 23a downwardly and thus breaks the seal between sleeve 23 and shoulders 19 and the compartment 12 is vented through slots 22 and bores 18. The axially resilient portion can be shaped to define a bellows as in Fig. 1 or it can be in the form of a tapering cylinder. In order to fill compartments 12 with electrolyte the battery cover is removed, thus sealing the space between the lower ends of the sleeves and lid 15 and electrolyte is poured into channel 17. The level rises in the compartments until it reaches the level of the baffles which is just below the desired electrolyte level. The electrolyte then fills the sleeves. The cover is then replaced, thus venting the compartment and electrolyte flows from the sleeves into their respective compartments thus equalizing the levels.
