Ignition pins for starting technical processes are produced by (a) impregnating the pins one or more times with a soln or suspension contg. a reducing agent but not an oxidising agent, and (b) impregnating the pins one or more times with a soln or suspension contg an oxidising agent but not a reducing agent, the pin being dried after impregnation. Specif. impregnation is effected by dipping, spraying, or use of a sponge or fabric. The impregnations are effected successively with the reducing agent and oxidising agen. After each impregnation the pins are impregnated with a phlegmatising agent, esp. a nitrocellulose lacquer or waterglass. There is no formation of explosive crusts on the edges of the process vessesl. and no risk of premature explosion, drying being effected rapidly.
