Membrane electrode of the ion selective type, with an internal soln. for the electrochemical determination of hydrogen ions in strong acids, esp. metal pickling baths, has a membrane consiting of an acidic cation exchange material based on a synthetic resin eg. polystyrene contg. -SO3H or -COOH gps. Rapid and reliable measurements in strongly acidic solns contg fluoride and metal ions are possible.
