Benzoin esters of aliphatic and cycloaliphatic carboxylic acids, useful as plasticisers for plastics and accelerators for UV-hardening of plastics, are prepd. by reacting CO and H2 in vol. ratio 1 : 5 to 1 : 0.2 (1 : 1) with benzil and 2-14C olefins at a mol. ratio benzil : olefin of 1 : 0.1 to 1 : 15 and at a combined press. of CO and H2 of 10-80 atmos. at 80-140 degrees C. in the presence of 1.10-3 to 5.10-1 wt. % Rh as catalyst.
