1461572 Feeding webs MASSON SCOTT THRISSELL ENG Ltd 8 March 1974 [9 March 1973] 11557/73 Heading B8R The leading end of a web is threaded through apparatus comprising feed rollers, suction conveyer bands, and the like web engaging elements by pressurized air, exhausting from arrays of jets symmetrically arranged on both sides of the web path, arrays being convergent in the direction of web feed. The elements may comprise, in succession, unwinding rollers (2), Fig. 1 (not shown), a curl corrector (3), an inspection device (4), a tension control device (5), feed rollers (6), and cutter rollers (7) which cut the web into sheets. One form of array is shown in Fig. 2 and comprises orifices 15 in curved members 13, 14, the orifices being inclined to different extents towards the web feed direction and non- uniformly spaced. The members 13, 14 may be formed by butting together grooved wedge-like elements to form ducting or by attaching nozzles to support plates. The air may be ionized to counteract electrostatic charges on the web. The members may be removed after threading. The web may additionally be supported by the Bernonitter effect.
