The complexes are of formulae Ni(MZ3)4 (I) and Ni(MZ3)2 (II), (where M is P, As or Sb; Z is R or OR, R being is not18C alkyl or aryl at least one Z is OR and the R radicals of a ligand MZ3 may be the same or different). The elementary Ni is reacted with the ligand MZ3 at 0-150 degrees C in the presence of =5 mol/million mol., based on the amt. of ligand, of a catalyst (R'O)xR''yMXz (where R' and R'' are each as R; x and z are 1-2; y is 0 or 1; x + y + z = 3; and X is Cl, br or I), and for the prepn. of complexes of formula (III): Ni(MZ3)2A, a monoolefinic org. cpd. A, free from other C-C unsatn. and contg. 2-22C atoms, is also present. Rapid reactions are obtd. when using org. mono- or di-nitriles as solvents. Complexes are used as hydrocyanation and oligomerisation catalysts.
