Binders for asphalt floor finishes are produced by (a) deoiling a vacuum residue derived from a paraffinic or mixed crude, and (b) blowing the prod. at a temp. rising from 160 degrees C to 250 degrees C until it has a density of 1-1.05 g/cm3 at 25 degrees C, a softening point (ball and ring test) of 70-130 degrees C (pref. 85-125 degrees C), and a penetration of =1.0 mm at 25 degrees C. Products contg. the binders can be used as load-carrying floor coverings and underlays for plastics floor coverings, thus the use of high-vacuum bitumens derived from napthenic crudes (which are in short supply) is avoided. The vacuum residue can be de-oiled by standard methods, e.g. by extraction with propane or light gasoline at 70-80 degrees C/30-40 atm. The product is pref. blown with 0.1-1 (esp. 0.35) m3/min/tonne of air.
