Process for obtaining water soluble extracts of low mol. wt. and contg. diaminopimelic acid from E. coli cells comprises subjecting the de-lipidised bacterial residue of E. coli cells to a weak extn., and isolating the water soluble extracts by physicochemical methods. The weak extraction can be carried out by homogenisation in an aq. medium opt. in the presence of a non ionic detergent. The extracts obtd. are novel and are used as immunological adjuvants to increase antibody prod., they do not have arthrogenic activity. In adult humans doses are 10-50 mg/day.
