The teeth on the foot plate which project into the grooves of the escalator steps are made of an elastically yielding, electrically insulating material. A conducting loop is fitted into the teeth in such a way, that =1 arm of the loop breaks causing the escalator to stop when a tooth is bent to a predetermined extent by clothing trapped in the tooth. The teeth pref. have a breaking point, which is arranged below the surface of the grooves of the steps.
