Compact linear motor for model train - with pattern of permanent magnets in track and variable electromagnets on train

The track has two side flanges with sets of permanent magnets positioned along it in a plastic strip with opposing poles. A double poled electromagnet is mounted on the train with similar poles towards the permanent magnets. Electric wipers are mounted on each side of the train to pick up current from contact strips on the side flanges. The synchronisation of the electromagnet pulses with the permanent magnets is achieved by gaps in the contact strip on one side formed by insulating spacers. The system is simple and compact and ideally suited for model trains, with the speed controlled by the DC voltage of the supply.
