The ratio of the weight of hydrogen tocarbon in the fuel is less than one quarter. Addition of a fine spray of water adjusts the hydrogen and carbon weight ratio to such a value that free carbon cannot escape from the flame in the form of smoke. The special sprayer used operates with liquid water and droplets which have diameter of about ten microns are formed by means of a high speed gas stream from a water surface. These small water particles are immediately evaporated in the flame and the generated steam is available for conversion reaction. The gas is supplied through a pipe which has a nozzle plate at its upper end. This upper end is enclosed by a cylindrical chamber which is connected to the gas pipe.
