Extremely thin, unsintered PTFE tape is produced by pressing, so that it is free from fibre orientation. It can be applied to a conductor as lubricating layer below the actual insulation and the entire cable subjected to heat treatment so that th PTFE layer sinters and the insulating layers are either bonded by a high temp. adhesive or sintered at the same time. The tape can also be sintered with other insulating matls. by heating. It can be moulded parallel around the conductor, instead of winding helically. Used esp. with wrapped polyimide insulation for cables used in aircraft and satellites, where lightness and extreme thinness are important.
