Development of Synthetic Insulating Tape for Ehv Cables

Research in progress to develop polymeric oil-impregnated tapes for use as the dielectric of a superconducting power transmission cable is described. The studies involved investigation of cold-drawing and hydrostatic extrusion as tape fabrication methods, materials testing to measure the compatibility of the polymers with suitable liquid impregnants and to measure the mechanical properties of tape materials, the development of a machine for applying multiple layers of tape to a cable, and the use of an x-ray system for investigating the effects of bending on the integrity of taped cables.
