Determn of carbon in org. substances contd. in water by oxidation, expulsion, of the resulting CO2 and its determin in a gas analyser (pref. i.r analyser) is improved by photo-chemically effecting the oxidation with oxygen in an acid aq. medium under u.v irradiation from a mercury vapour lamp; the resulting CO2 is expelled and determined by the known method. Very small quantities of org. carbon (=0.001 mg/1. waer) can be determined reliably; the appts is relatively simple; the procedure is rapid; high temps are not applied (the oxidation is carried out at 30-50 degrees C); dangerous chemicals are not used; operating cost is low.
