V2O5 gels contg. 5-10% V2O5 and 95-90% water are used for the prodn. of V2O5 coatings on formed bodies, a thin layer of the gel being applied to the surface of the bodies followed by the removal of the water and a thermal treatment. The formed bodies are pref. immersed in the gel and the water removed by heating at max. 105 degrees C; alternatively the water may be removed by using a vacuum, possibly employing heat to assist the vacuum. The thermal treatment is pref. undertaken at 300-700 degrees C. Process is used for the mfr. of catalysts. The coating of V2O5 is restricted to the surface of the catalyst body and does not penetrate into the interior where it performs no useful purpose as a catalyst.
