The acids used may be hydrochloric acid or soap stock (as defined). The upper fatty sludge phase is separated from the aqueous phase and the former is heated to form an upper phase containing technical fatty acid and a lower aqueous phase containing the precipitation chemicals used to precipitate the original stabilized aqueous fatty sludge, these two phases then being separated.
