Flavonoids are recovered from the ground seeds of Sylibum spp. by digesting the ground seeds (opt. after) extraction with a fat-solvent, pref. a halogenated hydrocarbon of specific gravity 1.35) with a strongly polar solvent; subsequently exhaustively extracting with acetone methanol or ethylacetate, purifying by an extraction (pref. countercurrent) with a system consisting of ethylacetate a polar solvent and aq. NaCl; subjecting the flavonoids to partition extraction with methanolic CaCl2, soln CaCl2-contg. ethylene glycol and hydrocarbons; precipitating the flavonoids in the form of a crude product by dispersing the extraction water; opt. crystallising the major flavonoids from a small amt of MeOH; opt. recrystallising from acetone/MeOH or methanolic CaCl2/water; and opt. separating flavonoids remaining in the mother liquor by column chromatography or fractional extraction. Silybum marianum is a medicinal plant used against liver disorders and gallstones.
