Samples of bacteria to be identified are tested with a set of standard reagents so that an observer can visually classify certain identifying characteristics, each of which can be nominated as: specific positive, specific negative or uncertain. The "uncertain" results are discarded, and the specific results are keyed into an electronic logic circuit comprising a number of multi-input gates, each activated only by a predetermined combination of key signals which correspond to the identity of specific bacteria; this identification can be indicated by illumination of a diode when the gate is activated. Much faster indentification of samples and elimination of laborious visual comparison checks.
