Benzyl phthalates - from sodium alkyl phthalates, and benzyl chloride reac-ted in butanol or dioxane at 120-125 deg

In practice, sodium carbonate and the alkyl acid phthalate are introduced into the solvent, heated to about 120 degrees C, and the benzyl chloride added, opt. together with a catalyst e.g. triethylamine, where about 1 mol. alkyl acid phthalate about 0.5 mol. sodium carbonate and a slight excess of benzyl chloride is used/100 ml solvent. The double phthalates are obtd. in about 96% yields, and are used as plasticisers.
