Artificial rock for rock work in gardens and on lawns comprises a porous, rigid core material consisting of expandable material such as polyurethane, polystyrene, hardphenolic foam or porous cement which is coated with a prepn. based on acrylic resin, polyvinyl propionate, polyester resin or cement, the prepn. being mixed with kaolin, chalk, BaSO4, powdered quartz or slate, fine sands, powdered SiO2, Fe oxide, TiO2 or other (in)organic pigments which impart the appearance of natural rock. The rock is lightweight and therefore easily handled and transported.
