Method of sealing a piece of ceramic to a piece of metal comprises forming a thin metal deposit by vapour deposition between the parts followed by diffusion welding under pressure and at a controlled temp. In particular, niobium is joined to alumina by applying a coating of niobium in a sealed chamber by reduction of niobium fluoride with hydrogen to produce the metallic deposit.
