Multi cylinder I.C. engine has a supply installation to introduce a rich mixture into the first cylinder with a second supply installation to supply a poor mixture to the second cylinder and with a thermic reactor connected to both cylinders and receiving exhaust gases from them. The cylinder pair is arranged so that ignition takes place almost simultaneously in both cylinders with the air fuel proportion of the mixtures adjusted to provide a total proportion of air to unburnt fuel of the exhaust gases within the region of 13 to 1 and 17 to 1.
