1378882 Removing deposits POLAR CHEMICALS Ltd 16 May 1972 [16 Feb 1971] 4742/71 Headings F4B and C5G Soot or other deposits are removed from surfaces swept by combustion products by applying to the hot surfaces a mixture of ammonium nitrate, and at least one nitrate of an alkali metal, copper, zinc or an organic base, without the addition of oxidisable organic material, sulphur or a sulphur compound. The additive may be dispersed in the flame or injected into a boiler in powder or liquid form, and contains up to 10% by weight of corrosion inhibiter such as magnesium carbonate, calcium carbonate, ammonium carbonate or hexamethyline tetramine. A solid additive comprised 78% by weight of potassium nitrate, 17% of ammonium nitrate and 5% by weight of magnesium carbonate. A liquid additive was a solution of 150 grms. potassium nitrate, 100 gms. ammonium nitrate, 5 gms. hexamethylene tetramine and 5 gms ammonium carbonate in 1 litre of water.
