1378710 Educational appliances STAFFORDSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL 11 May 1973 [12 May 1972] 22452/72 Heading G5G [Also in Division F4] A teaching aid for the deaf comprises a mirror 1 associated with an adjustably mounted spotlamp having a hood 13. The mirror 1 has a frame 2 which is attached to a base 3 by means of hinges and a pivoted stay (4), Fig. 2 (not shown). The bulb holder. (9) of the spotlamp is mounted on a pivot pin (10) and is adjustable in two mutually perpendicular directions by means of a linkage (7b-7f, 8b-8f), Fig. 3 (not shown), including two threaded rods provided with adjusting knobs 7a, 8a, the bulb holder 9 being positioned behind an unsilvered portion of the mirror. The spotlamp may be mains operated, but is preferably powered by batteries contained in a housing (14), Fig. 2 (not shown), carried by the base 3. In use, the teacher and a deaf pupil sit side by side, and the mirror and spotlamp are adjusted so that the reflection of the teacher's illuminated mouth is clearly visible to the pupil; the mouth movements resulting from the teacher's enunciation of various sounds are then copied by the pupil in trying to make equivalent sounds. A second spotlamp may be provided to illuminate the pupil's mouth.
