1382639 Electroslag remelting INSTITUT ELEKTROSVARKI IMENI EO PATONA AKADEMII NAUK UKRAINSKOI SSR 30 May 1972 [28 May 1971 26 July 1971 (2)] 25308/72 Heading B3F [Also in Division H5] In an electroslag remelting process in which the current passes between a consumable electrode 3 and an internal surface of a mould 4, one or more regions of higher current density are established in the slag bath so that one part of the electrode is preferentially melted and the surface of the electrode assumes the form of at least two projecting portions. This may be achieved by providing projections 5 on the wall of the mould and projections 5SP1/SP along the top of one or more partitions 6 dividing the interior of the mould into two or more cavities. The projections 5SP1/SP may be in the form of truncated pyramids and are laterally aligned with those on the wall of the mould which are trapezoidal in plan. The projections 5SP1/SP on the partition may be provided with conduits 12 for feeding gases or gaspowder mixtures to the melting zone. Both the bottoms of the electrodes and the bottom of the molten metal pool take on an undulating shape during the remelting process.
